Speaking to the Grant County Retired Teachers Association

On February 18, I was so honored to be invited as the guest speaker at the Grant County Retired Teachers Association. I began by telling the members about my involvement and history within the Miss Arkansas Organization. I talked about the importance of scholarship and shared that I had won close to $30,000 in just the past year. The Miss America Organization is the number one provider of scholarship for young women. The audience seemed very interested in this fact.

I discussed the Miss America partnership with Children's Miracle Network and what that meant to me. As I talked about what I have gained from competing I began to share my platform. When I speak about my platform in schools I focus on dental care and providing students with what they need. I loved  being able to share more about the Good Shepherd Children's Home in Honduras and Operation Smile.

I have such a heart for this area of my platform and really enjoyed sharing it. The audience really enjoyed learning more about my journey and what the Miss Arkansas Organization is. Many came to me after with questions and very eager to learn more.

Thank you for having me! I enjoyed my time and hope to return soon!

Sharing Dental Care In Vilonia and Mayflower Schools

I was so thrilled to continue sharing my platform during the week of February 10-14.

On February 10th, I visited Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Moore's class at Vilonia Elementary. I was so happy to see my sweet dance student, Carly. She was such a great helper in my first experiment.

With the third grade classes I began by asking them a few questions about how they take care of their teeth. I then read them a story about going to the dentist. After our story we began our two experiments.

In the first experiment, I placed a rubber glove on my hand and we pretended like my fingers were teeth. Carly then spread peanut butter on and between my "teeth." Another student then began to brush my teeth. While the toothbrush did remove a lot of the peanut butter, there was still some between my teeth. Another student flossed between my "teeth" and we observed how important it is to floss everyday and make sure all of the food is out from between our teeth.

In the second activity we observed how much sugar is in a soda, energy drink, and apple juice. I let the students take turns scooping out how much they thought was in each. We then compared the actual amounts and discussed the effect sugar has on our teeth. The students then told me alternatives that would be better for our dental health than the three drinks in the activity.

I took questions and told the students the proper way to brush and floss. Every student promised they would use their dental kit every day that they were then given.

On the 12th, I returned to Vilonia Elementary to visit Mrs. Varner and Mrs. Carpenter's classes. These students were very intrigued by my presentation and had so many questions.

My favorite part of the day was when one of the students informed me he loved to dance also and then continued to show me his dance moves. It was great! I told all of young girls he would be who they needed to attend dances with in the future.

The next day I visited Mayflower Elementary and was so excited to see one of my dance students, Savannah. I was able to speak to the entire first grade. The students piled into the cafeteria eager to hear about dental care. I even had one student ask if I was the tooth fairy. I do think she was disappointed to find out that I was not.

On Valentines Day, I returned to Vilonia once again to speak to more third graders. This school was so welcoming all week and I really enjoyed being there.

In my first week of appearances I was able to share my platform with more than 300 students and give each one a dental kit.

Thank you to all of the instructors at Vilonia Elementary and Mayflower Elementary for making this possible. I appreciate the time with the students and look forward to more opportunities like these.

My First Appearance as Miss Diamond Lakes... Oakland Heights Elementary

I was crowned during the perfect month to keep spreading my platform. February is National Dental Health month. I was proud to make my first presentation as Miss Diamond Lakes to the Oakland Heights Elementary Preschool in Russellville.

I spoke to 80 preschoolers in 2 groups of 40. We read a book about the lion who wouldn't brush his teeth and talked about how important it is to take care of our mouth.

The students loved their dental kits and even taught me a few things. I had one student inform me that to make your teeth straight the dentist puts bracelets on them. This absolutely made my day and I loved seeing the children's beautiful smiles.

Thank you so much to the teachers at Oakland Heights Elementary and Preschool for sharing your precious students with me.

Miss Diamond Lakes 2014

Wow! What a true honor. I remember competing in this preliminary my first year in the organization and thinking that I would love the opportunity to work with the directors and be Miss Diamond Lakes one day. This is my final year competing in the Miss Arkansas System and I couldn't be more excited to return to the Miss Arkansas stage as Miss Diamond Lakes 2014.

The Miss Diamond Lakes Pageant took place on February 1 at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia.

I had a huge decision to make upon entering this pageant. As the owner of The Studio By Lauren and choreographer/teacher for the competition team, entering this pageant meant I would miss my dance students group dances during their first competition of the season. They would be in Rogers competing at Masquerade Dance Competition. I discussed the situation with my students and their parents. All of them know becoming Miss Arkansas is a huge goal and dream of mine. Many of my students have watched me in the system and few have even begun competing themselves. They were all very supportive and told me they would be fine at the competition without me.

This did make for a busy weekend, but as planned I drove to Arkadelphia Friday night, competed Saturday and after the pageant that night I drove to Rogers to be with my students on Sunday for the solo competition.

I was so happy to win overall interview, overall evening gown and be crowned MISS DIAMOND LAKES 2014! I was also so proud of my new teen queen, Aubrey Reed. I have always thought this young lady is absolutely precious and can not be more excited to spend the year with her! She is a true inspiration and role model to all.

I have an amazing support group behind me and am very excited to work with this amazing board of directors this year. I can not say enough wonderful things about them, and I can not wait to see what my journey to Miss Arkansas brings.
